Central Maryland Speech Therapy Program Success!
When the Loyola University speech and communication clinic in Columbia, Maryland announced it was closing, we knew we had to step up for our community. Not only did many with Down syndrome lose their affordable access to speech and communication therapy, but also graduates of the Loyola Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program would no longer have as much access to working with people who have Down syndrome.
So, here we are, hosting the Central Maryland Speech Therapy Program (CMSTP) for more than one year!
Since the program’s inception in early 2024, the CMSTP has:
Served 45 clients
In 3 counties (Howard County, Baltimore City, and Baltimore County
Advocated and supported 4 graduate SLP students
Provided a $45,000 value to the Down syndrome community and low or zero cost to participants
Megan Hayes, owner and SLP at Sunflower Speech & Language Therapy, LLC serves as our clinical supervisor for two Loyola University SLP graduate students each semester. This is a learning experience for them and an amazing way to continue teaching and advocating for the Down syndrome and developmental disabilities communities. The graduate students plan and execute sessions, with Megan to guide them along the way. And our Down syndrome community (and others with disabilities) receive services at low or no cost.
